Exploring the Everglades

Everglades Isle Motorcoach Resort

Everglades City, FL

We traveled down the west coast of Florida to Everglades City and the Everglades Isle Motorcoach Resort. Lush, luxurious, waterfront RV sites and a few miles from the entrance to the Everglades National Park.

Key Takeaways:

  • Lush, luxurious, expensive
  • Waterfront, paved and spacious RV sites
  • Resort amenities with pool, clubhouse, tiki bar
  • Fenced dog park and dog friendly
  • Perfect spot to explore the Everglades

Our Stay:

We traveled three hours down the west coast of Florida to Everglades City and the Everglades Isle Motorcoach Resort. This luxury motorcoach resort accommodates RV’s greater than 36’ – we barely made the cutoff. At the time of our stay, most of the 61 sites were privately owned so we were fortunate to snag one of the few transient sites. All sites were beautifully landscaped. Our waterfront site was spacious with mature palm trees and brick pavers. We enjoyed watching the airboats come and go at sunset until the bugs came out! From the old Florida clubhouse with bar and restaurant to the beautiful pool and tiki bar, everything about this resort spells luxury motorcoach living. Although most of the coaches were high-end class A motorhomes, everyone was friendly and made us feel very welcome. We walked through the park every morning and evening with the dogs and were thankful for the dog stations located throughout the park and the gated dog area.

What to do:

Everglades City is a few miles from the west entrance of the Everglades National Park. We spent a day driving through the park with the dogs to Shark Valley and the Loop Road complete with several alligator sightings. The park is not dog friendly due to the danger to pets from alligators and snakes. We’re okay with that – don’t want our dogs to be alligator bait. Dogs can ride in cars but cannot be left unattended in vehicles due to the heat. We were able to get them out in parking lots near buildings and at rest stops.

The next day we left the dogs in the RV and took an hour and a half airboat tour.  This was the highlight of our stay. Following recommendations from locals, we opted to take a private tour with Down South Airboat Tours. We drove about 45 minutes from Everglades City for the launch spot on the freshwater side of the Everglades.  This grassland tour was spectacular! Our captain grew up in the area and was extremely knowledgeable about the eco-systems and wildlife. We had several alligator sightings as well as wood storks, egrets, herons and anhingas. We highly recommend this tour. The cost was just over $300 for two people but well worth it.

The town of Naples and Marco Island are a short drive from Everglades City. We found a dog-friendly restaurant and brew put – the Marco Island Brewery.  Lunch was awesome and the girls hung out with us on their large outdoor patio.  After lunch we explored the island a bit – you’ll need some bucks to live on this island.  Beautiful gulf coast beaches and beautiful homes and condos. Spring break here too so lots of people and traffic. We’re off to the Keys next and Spring Break will follow us there as well.

Red Dog Review: 4Paws (out of 5 Paws)

4PAWS! Well, this was a very foofoo RV park and we fit in just fine.  Not one dog called us mountain hicks or asked how we fit into our small RV.  The dog park was nice.  We really wanted to enjoy the pool but there was a “no dogs in the pool rule.”  We had fun traveling in the Everglades and watching the alligators from the car was just fine with us.  We took in one brewery – Marco Island Brewery and our waiter was very attentive and quickly provided us water and a shaded place to hang out with mom and dad. We’d go back there again. We give this stop 4PAWS because the dog park was a bit small, and they didn’t let us in the pool.  The Everglades National Park was beautiful but there were too many alligators!

The Forgotten Coast/Ho Hum RV Park

The Forgotten Coast/Ho Hum RV Park

Carrabelle, Florida

A 5 PAW review from Chili and Cedar! Ho Hum RV Park is a dog-friendly stay on the Forgotten Coast. Dogs are welcome on local beaches in Carrabelle and St. George Island.

Key Takeaways:

Moving on down the coast 90 miles west of Port St. Joe, we checked into the Ho Hum RV Park for a 5-night stay.  The name tells you this is not a resort – it’s a small, ocean front RV park we absolutely loved.  We stayed on an inside lot for two nights (there was some road noise off Hwy 98) and then moved to an ocean front lot for the remainder of our stay.  Our RV sat just feet from the ocean providing a lovely ocean breeze and the calming sound of waves.  The gravel lots were level and provided enough room to set up our screen porch. The park bath house and laundry facilities were clean and well maintained. The regular internet was slow so we upgraded to premium internet at $1.50 per day.  Cable was provided as well.  We found the hosts very helpful and dog friendly!  There was a grassy area for the dogs and a half mile of beach accessible from the park.  We caught some amazing sun rises but there were no real sunsets from the park, just some beautiful pink and purple hues reflecting off the water.  We opted to take our dogs to Carrabelle Beach about 5 minutes away to a dog friendly beach.  The beach was level and uncrowded and we walked 2-3 miles every morning with the dogs.

What to do:

Enjoy the laid-back friendly atmosphere of the Forgotten Coast.  Visit the historic Village of Carrabelle and enjoy local seafood.  Visit St. George Island with pristine, dog friendly beaches and restaurants.  The St. George Island State Park has a nice RV park and dog friendly walking trails but the beaches in the State Park are not dog friendly.    We enjoyed the Blue Parrot Café on St. George Island – awesome seafood and dog-friendly seating on their spacious decks.

Red Dog Review:

5Paws!  Very dog-friendly atmosphere in the Ho Hum RV Park and surrounding area.  Short walk to potty and lots of other doggies.  We loved our walks on the beach, running from the big waves and sand in our toes.  The Blue Parrot Café was our favorite – we each got a bucket of ice water to keep us cool.

Best Dog Beach Ever

Best Dog Beach Ever

Bay Aire RV Park, Palm Harbor, Florida

  • Small, older RV park with tight spots – fine for a short stay
  • Close to Gulf Coast Beaches, Honeymoon Island, Dunedin, Fort De Soto Park
  • Dog friendly
  • Mostly long-term rentals with spacious transient sites
  • Friendliest RV park to date
  • Visit Fort De Soto Park for dog friendly beaches and dog parks

Our Stay

Bay Aire RV Park is located on the Gulf Coast, northwest of Tampa.  We picked this location to visit friends in the area and as a stopover on our travels down the west coast of Florida. We found many of the parks in this area to be booked months ahead but this park was a nice find. The park is small (170 sites) and older with only a handful of transient sites. We were greeted by friendly managers and escorted to site 50. I wasn’t sure how we were going to fit into the tight space, but it worked out with help from the manager. Aside from the tight fit, the resort is well maintained and very dog friendly.  We walked a short distance to a gate that led to a sidewalk for dog walking. Everyone we met in this park was incredibly friendly! We felt very welcome in this park.

What to do:

The best part about this park was the proximity to restaurants in Palm Harbor, Dunedin and our most exciting find to date – Fort De Soto Park.  We traveled about 30 mins to this beautiful Gulf Coast park to find a designated dog beach and huge gated dog park! The girls were so excited to romp on the beach and play in the waves.  They met several new friends and had a great time. The weather was cooler that day and very windy which kept the people crowds away. We also checked out the campground at the park and will definitely book a stay for future travels in this area. Local friends told us to book this park 6 months in advance.

Another dog friendly beach is located on Honeymoon Island, a short drive from Palm Harbor.  We opted to avoid the Spring Break crowds and did not visit this island but will add it to our list next time.

 Red Dog Review:

5 PAWS: We will stay anywhere in this area if we can go to our own dog beach!  The RV park was small but we had nice walks each day outside the park and all the people and dogs in the park were very nice. We had our best day ever at the Fort De Soto Park.  They had a beach for only dogs (we let mom and dad come too).  This is the first time we swam and played in the surf and ran in the sand. We met lots of other dogs at the beach – best time ever!  We give it 5PAWS because we were treated so well and did we tell you about the dog beach!

Recreation Plantation RV Resort

Lady Lake, Florida

Key Takeaways:

  • Expansive RV resort with over 1,000 sites on over 100 acres
  • Close to The Villages, golf courses, restaurants, shopping
  • Dog friendly with a huge dog park
  • Mostly long-term rentals with spacious transient sites
  • Traffic, Traffic Traffic
  • Gas was $4.58/gallon for diesel – YIKES

Our Stay

Recreation Plantation RV Resort in central Florida caters to long-term renters.  With close proximity to The Villages, it was a perfect 3-night stay while visiting friends.  For travelers who look for resort amenities, you’ll find lots of amenities: a large, heated pool, pickle ball courts, three club houses and clean bath/laundry facilities.  Full hookups, cable TV and Internet are also available.  Our site was located about a mile from the dog park, but it was a nice walk for the girls.  There was plenty of shade in the RV park; transient sites were mostly gravel and grass.  If we had known, we would have asked for a site in the transient area to the right of the entryway.  Those sites were well shaded, level and easier to get in and out of and closer to the dog park.  The office personnel were very friendly, and we found everyone in the park to be super nice and dog friendly too.  Our complaint about this area was the traffic.  By midday the surrounding roads were jammed with inattentive drivers.  We loved being close to amenities, golf courses and shopping.  Nice for a short stay, but we have crossed The Villages off our list as a potential retirement area due to traffic and overcrowding.

What to do:

Visit The Villages and golf, shop, enjoy the restaurants and many activities.

Red Dog Review:

4 PAWS! We liked this park!  We especially liked the dog park, but it was a long walk to get there from our site.  Lots of dogs and dog-friendly folks at the park.  Mom made dog food while we were here and that is always one of our favorite activities, especially when she gets sloppy and drops a taste or two.  We give it 4 paws because there was no access to a dog friendly walking trail.

Florida Panhandle Hidden Gem

Florida Panhandle Hidden Gem

Old Salt RV Park, Port St. Joe, Florida

Key Takeaways:

  • Quaint boutique RV Park with spacious, level lots.
  • Beautiful white-sand, uncrowded, dog-friendly beaches a short walk away.
  • A perfect spot to chill and unwind.

Our Stay:

East of Panama City on the Gulf Coast lies the beach town of Port St. Joe.  With a small town feel and soft, white sand beaches, this laid-back fishing village is a respite from the traffic and crowded beaches of the Fort Walton-Destin-Panama City area.  We arrive at the Old Salt RV Park to find a quaint, gated RV park just a short walk from the beach.  The graveled lots are level and spacious.  The communication from the hosts was exceptional and included walking directions to the dog friendly beaches.  Our assigned lot included a picnic table and fire ring and was close to the well-maintained bath house and laundry facility.  A central fire-pit area and gazebo provided a gathering spot for RVers.  Park internet was good.  We heard some road noise from County Road 396, but we did not find it bothersome.   Weather was perfect with a chilly start in the morning and then upper 60’s and lower 70’s during our stay.

What to do:

Enjoy the flat, uncrowded, white sand beaches in Port St. Joe and Cape San Blas.  Walk the dogs for miles on the dog-friendly Port St. Joe beaches.  (Note:  Adjacent Mexico Beach is not pet friendly).  Eat at local seafood restaurant or pub.  Panama City is 36 miles west and has several dog-friendly restaurants.  Check out Barefoot on the Bay Bar & Grill for a casual dining experience with dog-friendly patio seating.   Firepit relaxing with the dogs.  Watch amazing sunsets on the beach.

Red Dog Review:

5 PAWS! This dog-friendly RV resort is perfect.  The owners were welcoming and gave us all the info we needed for a pet-friendly stay.  Every day we walked to the beach about two blocks away.  Beach walks were pawsome in Port St. Joe!  We loved the soft sand on our paws, chasing the ocean waves and meeting dog friendly folks on the beach.  We also visited nearby Salinas Park and spent a day on the beach.  We had to be on our leashes but that’s okay…  We also loved visiting Panama City Beach with a stop at the Barefoot on the Bay Bar & Grill.  Our waitress brought us a bowl of water – very thoughtful and much appreciated!
